This blog is all about the fascinating world of Yume Nikki characters, featured throughout the entire game. There is something for everyone here, from the perennially popular Madotsuki to the lesser-known Kupsuke.
Where did it all begin?
Yume Nikki was released by Kadokawa games in 2004. In 2018, the Japanese game maker used RPG Maker Software to launch a reboot, known as Yume Nikki: Dream Diary. Both versions of the game include atmospheric dream worlds, you return to the block world to chase madotsuki, just beware the game teleports madotsuki to a neon parrot. Both also begin when Madotsuki enters the bedroom, interacts with the bed, and chooses a realm to begin her adventure. While there are many endings available, in the original game there is one secret ending that you may not know about. Spoiler alert: Madotsuki jumps out the window, so it is largely thought that she committed suicide.
Which yume nikki character are you?
As mentioned, the first game in the Japanese surrealist series Yume Nikki was launched in 2004, and the second game, Dream Diary, was launched in 2018 and has all the effects. Unfortunately, the games have minor language, and there is seldom any obvious storyline or goal.
The protagonist, Madotsuki, is a young lady who flees into her fantasies to avoid reality. In Madotsuki’s dreams, she travels through a network of linked settings known as the “dream world,” gathering different items (referred to as “NPCs”) that change the way she looks or gives her new skills.
Despite the absence of a clear purpose or goal, Madotsuki sometimes has nightmares that must be avoided. Madotsuki will awaken in her bed in the real world if she passes away in a dream.
The Yume Nikki series has twelve playable characters, each with unique skills and fantasy settings.
- Madotsuki: The protagonist of the Yume Nikki series. Madotsuki is a young woman who suffers from severe social anxiety and prefers to stay isolated in her apartment. As an escape from reality, Madotsuki retreats into her dreams, exploring the surreal “dream world.”
- Monoko: A little child who is an NPC in Madotsuki. Monoko is incredibly playful and loves dream exploration. She can go to locations other characters can’t because of her ability to float and climb walls.
- Neko is one of Madotsuki’s NPCs and has a distinct cat face. She is very shy and often hides from other characters. However, Neko can reach places others can’t due to her sharp claws, allowing her to climb walls and ceilings.
- Kikiyu: Another Madotuski NPC who is a little lad. Kikiyu is very inquisitive and enjoys exploring the realm of dreams. Because of his capacity to shrink, he can squeeze through tight spots where other characters can’t.
5–12.: The remaining eight playable creatures are all animal-based, and each has a special skill: the bear inhabits the tundra, the rabbit the forest, the bat the cave, the bird the sky, the fish the sea, the mouse the mansion, the dog the nightmare, and the cat (factory).
How many yume nikki characters?
There are 24 recognized characters in the Yume Nikki fandom as of December 2018. This contains Madotsuki, the primary character, and other dream characters. While some of these characters are unique inventions, some are based on urban legends or other creepypastas.
List of yume nikki characters
The 2004 freeware psychological horror adventure game Yume Nikki by Japanese developer Kikiyama is considered significant among the surrealist dream community.
Throughout the game, Madotsuki may gather twenty-four Effects. Each of them gives Madotsuki a particular skill that she may utilize to explore new regions or get around barriers, and they can all be donned and used whenever she wants.
-Madotsuki: The main character of Yume Nikki. Madotsuki is a loner who lives alone in her apartment and dreams of avoiding reality. She seldom leaves her room or engages in social interaction; thus, very little is known about her.
-Ponoko: A young woman living in the Nexus. While Poniko is silent, she seems to comprehend Madotsuki and is always glad to see her. Ponoko and Madotsuki seem to be related in some manner since their dreamscapes are similar.
-Nyx: An enigmatic creature that likewise lurks in the Nexus. Although Nyx is silent, she seems to be close to Ponoko. Nyx appears to emanate foreboding energy and is always surrounded by darkness.
Uboa, a faceless ghostly entity, lurks in Madotsuki’s dreams, often appearing without warning or explanation. It has many different forms but is most commonly depicted as a floating head with tentacles. Uboa seems to be connected to Madotsuki’s subconscious fears and desires and may represent her repressed emotions about her reality.
The Three Faceless Ghosts: These mysterious entities are some of the first Madotsuki encounters in her dreams. They seem to have a vested interest in her, haunting her journey with their ghostly presence multiple times.
The Knife-Wielding Man is a hostile figure in Madotsuki’s dream world that poses a great danger. He appears to be intent on stabbing her, so she must be careful to evade him if she wishes to remain alive.
The Flying Cat, with its friendly cat face, has a ‘cat effect’ on Madotsuki as it teleports her to essential locations in the dream world. It can be seen carrying her on its back, aiding her in her journey and providing a ‘cat effect’.
The Witch is a seemingly benevolent ghost in Madotsuki’s dreams, but she hides a sinister secret that Madotsuki must uncover if she ever hopes to escape her nightmare and wake up.
