The protagonist, Madotsuki, is controlled by the player as she explores her dreams and gathers 24 artifacts that alter her appearance and gear. Aside from random happenings, the reboot also features unique gameplay sequences, all the effects and cutscenes.
It was created using RPG Maker 2003, however it lacks many of the usual RPG components, such as a plot or battle system, and instead focuses on atmospheric dream worlds exploration.

The player controls Madotsuki, a girl who lives by herself in a one-room apartment. The player can’t initially leave her residence, where the game starts.

By writing in Madotsuki’s dream diary while seated at her desk, the player can preserve their progress. Madotsuki begins to dream when she is in her bed.
The Yume Nikki Nexus
Her dream starts in a place that looks a lot like her residence. After leaving the room, Madotsuki enters into a space known as the Nexus, which has 12 additional doors. Each door opens to a separate location in the dream world, each with its own setting and architecture.
Changing Madotsuki’s Appearance and Abilities
The player’s goal is to investigate these regions and gather 24 various effects, which, when utilized, alter Madotsuki’s appearance or gear. Interacting with specific items and non-player characters will have effects (NPCs). Madotsuki can be directed to other locations by other items and NPCs, but there is no way to reach a “finish” screen.
Yume Nikki’s Ending Is Not For Everyone
Random occurrences that can be cutscenes or have interactive components happen throughout the adventure. After obtaining all 24 effects, the player can access the game’s ending, which features Madotsuki leaping from her apartment’s balcony (so she committed suicide).
