MODERN TIMES

MAY 9 - JUNE 8, 2013

Monte Clark Gallery is pleased to present Modern Times, an exhibition of recent works by Roy Arden. An ensemble of paintings, video and assemblage, the works all reference the material aspects of modernity. Arden uses found objects and images as his starting point for depictions of the arrival of steam power and the internal combustion engine, plumbing, and a multitude of new conveyances: trains, cars, planes, motorised ships, and more.

Together these works echo the cataclysmic changes of early modernity and the traumas they induced, traumas that we are still working to understand in life and art.

Roy Arden's work can be found in numerous public collections in North America and Europe, including The National Gallery of Canada, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Centre Pompidou, Paris, The Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, and the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart. He has exhibited in dozens of international exhibitions from New York to Sharjah, and Berlin to Sydney. In 2007 the Vancouver Art Gallery mounted a survey show of his work covering the period 1981-2007. In 2013, Arden will exhibit in Damage Control: Art and Destruction Since 1950 at the Hirschhorn Museum in Washington D.C.

Yesterday, thrash metal gods Slayer posted an open letter to fans regarding the ill health of guitarist Jeff Hanneman, who suffered a spider bite last year that eventually left him in a medically induced coma, from which he was slowly recovering. Sadly, today, Hanneman passed away at age 49 of liver failure. The band’s publicist issued the following statement:

Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. He was 49. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.

It’s no exaggeration to say that Slayer are one of the most important bands in the history of metal if not American rock music, period. They were also one of the few metal bands to remain vital well into middle age. The loss of Hanneman is a significant one. Just terrible, sad news. RIP.

We worked on a great lookbook collaboration with Vancouver-based clothing company Lifetime Collective for their Holiday 2013 collection. We paid tribute to historical places in Greater Vancouver that contribute to the culture and scenery of the city we live in. Areas we commended for our shoot were The Sylvia Hotel, Arthur Erickson Law Courts, Pacific Central Station, Shanghai Alley, Main Street, Water Front Station, DR. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, and New Westminister's Antique Alley. Here is a preview of a few of the images:
