I’m obsessed with the Irish. An entire nation of self-loathing, ginger-headed savages. God bless ’em. A culture of defeat and drunkenness has produced some of the greatest art the world has seen. The best English-language literature is all Irish and the Pogues are one of the best bands ever. Describing his countrymen, the great novelist JP Donleavy said this: “Robust in spirit. Brave in adversity. Randy in appetite. Thirsty in drinking.” Aye. Patrick O’Dell is from Ohio. Which makes what I just said irrelevant. The man behind Epicly Later’d, the photo blog/VBS video series, is the unanimously approved documentarian of skateboard culture. Honest and unaffected, O’Dell’s work offers an insider’s look at the culture of skateboarding and the lives of pro skaters. The photographer/director took a second to answer a few questions and caption some photos we clipped from his blog.
Who are your favourite Canadian skaters and why?
I don’t usually think about what country skaters are from, but I would say Keegan Sauder, Rick McCrank, and Lil’ Fucky.
I like them both for different reasons. I like to relax in LA and celebrate in NYC.
What’s the last dream you had that you remember?
I had a dream I was in an Egyptian sarcophagus and a woman Pharaoh told me I had to fall asleep before the world ended. The sun started to rise and I wasn’t asleep yet, the world began to end and I woke up.
