Made Still is an exhibition featuring photography and ceramics where the genre of the still life is examined as a literal, physical, and ephemeral concept. The artists in the exhibition include: Jessica Eaton, Marten Elder, Robert Mapplethorpe, Andy Warhol, Fred Herzog, David Hockney, Karl Blossfeldt, Eadweard Muybridge, Michael Snow, Adad Hannah, with ceramic sculptures by Nathalee Paolinelli.
Still life arrangements have been used as ways of exploring the natural world, celebrating material pleasures and creating formal experiments for examination and observation. Often found within the genre are cut flowers, fruits, food, and man-made objects – items which offer extensive opportunity for the exploration of form and light, while also allowing for metaphorical interpretations relating to the passage of time. Photography is highlighted in this exhibition for the way in which it captures a moment in time, isolating movement and distilling it to a single moment. Set in conversation with Nathalee Paolinelli’s ceramic sculptures, adorned with living and cut stems and flowers, Made Still is a meditation on stillness as both moving and fixed.
