Brad Phillips, 2014

Jessica Bradley Gallery is pleased to present The Secret to Living, featuring artists Jason McLean, Sojourner Truth Parsons, Brad Phillips and Jon Sasaki. This exhibition curated by Leah Turner brings together painting, drawing and video by artists that share an interest in autobiography and emotional expression, representing a vision of the artist’s life in all its rough and romantic realities.

Over the last decade Canadian artist Brad Phillips has developed an international reputation for his extraordinary, masterfully rendered representational watercolour and oil paintings. Phillips weaves satire into his confessional narratives to play on the stereotypes associated with the artist, while exposing his personal, often-painful struggles with mental health, drug addiction, and his chosen vocation.

Like Phillips, Jason McLean’s drawings are directly derived from life. His frenetic visual mapping delivers an astoundingly poignant and detailed chronicle of the artist’s social and cultural milieu.

Sojourner Truth Parsons’ paintings hold a rare emotional potency. Like Phillips and McLean, Parsons tackles the darker realties of an artist’s life – poverty, self-doubt –rendered with expressive acuity and idiosyncratic beauty.

Toronto-based artist Jon Sasaki works in video, performance, sculpture and photography. Recalling the genre of inspirational posters, Sasaki’s determined feline in “Hang In There” offers a dose of pathos and humour to remedy feelings of futility.
