Personal Work, watercolour on paper, 2013 Brad Phillips The Rope At The End Of The Rope January 23 – March 1, 2014 Opening reception Thursday January 23, 6-8 pm Macaulay Fine Art is pleased to present a solo exhibition The Rope At The End Of The Rope by Brad Phillips. On view are a collection of new paintings, and video. In the main gallery, Phillips’ paintings take the subject of objects in his studio and life that relate to painting on a daily basis. Notes to himself, a cornice to burn incense on across from his desk, the flowers next to where he works, a woman alone on a beach make up the various parts of an ongoing quasi-autobiographical body of work. A 12 minute loop of 15 second videos accompanies the paintings in the smaller gallery. A caricature of sentimentality, he reflects on missing friends, remorse related to women, being in a new relationship, and about being stuck in his studio with cigarettes, flowers and a lighter. Brad Phillips’ work has most recently been exhibited at CSA Space, Vancouver; Louis B. James Gallery, NYC; Museum London, London ONT; The Hole, NYC; M+B Gallery, Los Angeles. He currently lives and works in Toronto, Ontario.
