When I am at the bookstore in Japan, I have the desire to browse through the idol book section, but am always too shy to be seen there. Anyways (like I said before in my “7 Days” diary but I’ll say it again) I hated Kishin Shinoyama’s work for the longest time… I think the photos I had seen were supposedly considered his serious art work… I don’t know… but anyways, I have recently come across some of his commercial work (idol photography from the 90s) and I have to admit that they are actually quite good in a disturbing kind of way. If someone can make you see beauty while at the same time feeling guilty or morally wrong, I think that’s something which I have to give him credit for because it is quite hard to make modern man feel anything these days…
But to defend my original opinion, I don’t think it’s very hard shooting beautiful photos of beautiful people. What I would like to see Kishin try doing is shooting beautiful photos of ugly or boring people… or even harder, someone who is both ugly and boring.
All photos of underaged Chiaki Kuriyama by Kishin Shinoyama.
