Spatial Analysis
Despite it's minimal features, more and more photos that we see on our social networking feeds were taken by a mobile phone. In 2008, the iPhone kicked the Canon Rebel Xti off the number one ranking as the most used camera on Flickr, the most popular image sharing network. My favorite cell phone images are not made by a photographer, but by an urban designer - Levi Lanser of Lanser+Dieleman. We asked the Rotterdam based architect to share a selection of his amazing camera phone photos with us and tell us more about his process.
jennilee marigomen I change my opinion about photography everyday. I have a touristic way of categorizing my fragmented life by trying to obtain the context trough the eyes of a user of public space from ground level. When I am not wearing my glasses or looking through a camera phone, details become less clear. In this way the functional aspects of space/place seem to wing everything.
For myself, photography is nothing more than but a mere tool. Spatial analysis is of great value. The use of a camera phone can be very useful during the part of a design process. Photography plays an analyzing role, it makes transformation or the reason why something should (not) be transformed. I am very fascinated by the communicative/delusional role it can play within our thoughts and our societies as images can lead very unexpected lives in our imaginations.
I am in constant conflict with myself. During my life as an urban designer, I constantly feel the urge to argue with every decision I make. During the process of making a picture I feel more free, while my brain is probably doing the same thing that it does when I draw that first line for in a design.

Levi was born on the 5th of September 1983 in Sliedrecht, in The Lands of Nether, named after a pair of jeans. “A day after obtaining the ‘Pegasus Boots’ in Zelda’s Links Awakening (on the Gameboy) I woke up and knew I wanted to become an urbanist or an architect”. He now has a Bachelor Degree in Urban Planning and a master degree in Urbanism. At this moment he works as a teacher in the most interesting design ‘ateliers’ at Urban Design. (NHTV) in Breda. Levi also is Co-owner and urbanist at LDS (LANSER+DIELEMAN STEDENBOUW) in Breda.
Although
the real beauty lies within forgetting things - not being able to look
directly back at it - and to travel back to that same place/situation
which is (probably) not the same anymore. Levi often tells himself it
never changed, just to fool and ease his mind and memories.
He once told me a story about ability, motivation an attitude, but I forgot how the story went.
He likes to be creative, but without having a super goal.
He has a mole on his chest shaped as a wu-tang logo.
He uses a Sony Ericsson K810i (from 2007).
His car is a bike.
